As I talk with people about their faith I am always interested to find out if they believe that they have had their sins forgiven and if so then why. Some will say that they are working for forgiveness of sin or that they hope that when their life ends their good will outweigh their bad and at that time they will be forgiven. Many people that I have had this conversation with will tell me that they do believe their sins have been forgiven because they believe in God. Others will say they are confident that they have been forgiven because they love God or because they have given their lives to Him.
When I have these conversations I always answer the same way; “It is good that you believe in God, but God is not enough!”
This answer has caused reactions that range from confusion to anger by those that think I am somehow suggesting that God cannot or will not forgive them for the sin that they have committed. If I am allowed, I try to share a few verses from scripture to support my statement:
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
There are many other verses that deal with this subject but I believe these get right to the heart of this issue. While most of us would agree that God exists, we often have a hard time understanding why Jesus is important. While it is true that Jesus is God, He is God in human flesh.
A great passage that illustrates the importance of Jesus is found in the book of Romans 5:15:
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
The amazing truth found here is that even though mans relationship with God is broken because of sin, God loved us enough to provide forgiveness for that sin through Jesus Christ. A man, Adam, sinned on the behalf of humanity and as a consequence we are all sinners. Another man, the God man Jesus, paid the price for sin on the behalf of humanity. Anyone who will put their faith in Him as God, His payment for sin on the Cross, and His resurrection from the dead will have the payment applied to their account.
What an amazing thing it is to understand that we can have a relationship with God Through Christ! I hope that this truth and the peace that it brings will be a source of great encouragement in your life.
